Palatal

Here we have information about palatals. We will define what a palatal is, show you some examples of words that contain a palatal, and even provide audio recordings so that you can listen to these examples, solidifying your overall understanding of palatals.

Palatal sounds are produced when your tongue articulates with your hard palate. Your hard palate is located directly behind your alveolar ridge.

Two sounds that are classified as palatals include j and j, which are both notated on the IPA chart of American English consonants.

A couple of examples of words that contain these sounds are “Yak” and “Yarn.” Below you can see their IPA transcriptions with the palatal indicated by a color.

We have also recorded these words for your convenience. For each example, you will first hear the pronunciation of the palatal, followed by the word.

Yak = [jæk]

Yarn = [jaɹn]
